W. George Schmid

August 5, 1930 ~ June 17, 2020 (age 89)

Obituary

W. George Schmid passed away peacefully to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 17, 2020. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy will endure through his family. George was born August 5, 1930 in Munich, Germany to Wolfram and Maria Schmid. He was a loving husband for 67 years to Hildegarde. Their life and love together was a love-story for the ages.

George Schmid in his career was an Architect and Engineer. From 1952 – 1964 he practiced Architecture and Landscape Architecture and from 1964 – 1992 his focus was Forest Products Engineering. He did for several years work as a contractor contributing to the Apollo Space Program for NASA in Huntsville Alabama. In retirement, -George loved to tend to his garden, aptly named Hosta Hill.

George is the Author of 3 Timber Press Books on Gardening, as well as being a  published author of numerous Hosta Journal Articles from 1980 to present. He was the Hosta Journal Co-editor; Chairman of the American Hosta Society Nomenclature Committee; Founder of Georgia Hosta Society; Board Member of International Aroid Society; American Hosta Society Historian; Member of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy; 1996 American Hosta Society 'Alex J. Summers Distinguished Merit Award';  and in 2016 received the American Hosta Society 'Lifetime Achievement Award'. His influence and legacy in the horticultural world will be a lasting one.

George was a man of integrity, he was hardworking ( a trait which he successfully imparted into his children ), friendly, a man of passion and zeal which drove him to excellence in all he did. The more technical and detailed the task, the better he liked it.

As accomplished as George was, the most important thing in his life was family. He was a devoted husband and father, and was the perfect role model of marriage and family for his children. In his groundbreaking book, The Genus Hosta, George dedicated this book to his wife, Hildegarde. He wrote, “To Hildegarde, for a lifetime of love, friendship, devotion, and support.” Today, his children declare; “To Dad, thank you for a lifetime of love, friendship, devotion, and support.”

W. George Schmid is preceded in death by his son, Henry George Schmid. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Hildegarde Schmid, his son Michael Schmid (Debbie), his daughters Hildegarde Schmid and Wilhelmina Souter, and son Siegfried Schmid (Tammy). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michael Schmid, Jr., Daniel Schmid (Jill), Timothy Schmid, Amelia McDaniel (Jason), Casey Schmid (Dominique), Calvin Schmid (Courtney), Corey Schmid, Matthew Sweeney (Sarah), Nicholas Souter, and Kreszenz Schmid.
