Timothy John Neal was born November 11, 1938 in Detroit, MI and passed from this life to his eternal home August 24, 2021 in Cumming, GA.
Through the influence and prayers of godly parents and grandparents, and through the ministry of Temple Baptist Church Tim placed his trust in Christ as a young boy.
After earning a Graduate of Theology degree from Baptist Bible College Springfield, MO Tim began his pastoral ministry as College and Career director at Gideon Baptist Church in Wichita, Kansas. He managed at the same time to strike up a romantic relationship with Joanie Leggett a teacher at the church’s Junior High School. They soon married and moved to Ontario, Canada to begin pastoring the First Baptist Church of Essex.
In the fall of 1964 Tim and Joanie came to Decatur, GA for the express purpose of starting a church. After knocking on doors in November they gathered as a group of 19 people and incorporated as South Decatur Baptist Church. God used this church powerfully through the 70’s and early 80’s. Many who were discipled during these years went out to lead in other ministries.
In the early 80’s South Decatur Baptist Church moved to Stone Mountain and changed its name to Cornerstone Baptist Church. In the mid nineties the church relocated to Lawrenceville. Its message of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection remained the same.
In 2013 Tim officially retired after serving 50 years ministering as a pastor, church planter. His unofficial ministry continued as God’s goodness and mercy followed him all the days of his life.
Since retiring Tim and Joanie have had time to travel he world and to be together. They have enjoyed loving their children and grandchildren and being an influence. Over his lifetime Tim has enjoyed collecting rocks, reading and studying our nation’s godly heritage. On the side he completed a BA in Journalism from Georgia State University. Everyone will warmly remember his joking and laughter.
Tim Neal will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents Larry Thomas Neal and Julia Erger Neal.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years Joan Leggett Neal, his sons Stephen Timothy Neal and Jason Jonathan Neal, a daughter Paige Neal Watson, his sister Marie (Bruce) Bloomingdale, a brother Paul (Sherry) Neal, a granddaughter Lauren (and Jared) Dyer, two grandsons Brandon and Kyle Watson and two great-grandchildren Logan and Anniston Dyer.
