US Coast Guard

Steven Shipley Bischoff

January 8, 2021

Steven Shipley Bischoff passed away on Friday, January 8, 2021. He was born in Atlanta, GA on January 18, 1951.

Steve was strong, with a kind and generous heart. He overcame many obstacles in life (spinal cord injury in 1981) but found a way to invent and figure out new ways to do the things he wanted to do. Quadriplegia did not define him.

Steve was extremely active until a stroke this past summer. He swam and was a boater; driving the boat from his wheelchair behind the helm he designed. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunting and fishing with equipment he usually redesigned. Steve loved the shooting sports and figured out ways to make the equipment work for him.

Steve was friendly and approachable for friends and for strangers. He was generous with sharing his time, thoughts, ideas, and also material things, including his creations, that might help others. He was a really nice guy! He enjoyed sharing information with others and teaching them how to get out and enjoy the things they no longer thought they could do.

Steve was adventurous, sometimes almost fearless, doing things and going places (in the woods, on the beach, etc.) where few in a wheelchair would dare venture, but he was also practical in that he always had a backup plan, device, or equipment for contingencies.

Steve was a fighter and did not give up easily. He went around some difficult problems until he conquered them another way. He delighted in a challenge and was imaginative and inventive and designed several unique items that enabled him to accomplish everyday tasks himself instead of depending on others.

Steve loved boats from the time he was a little boy, putting pictures of boats under his dad’s pillow in the hope his dad would buy one. He finally did. His love of the water and his drive to help others inspired him to join the United States Coast Guard, which he loved.

He married Karen on May 27, 1972. She was the love of his life and best friend for almost 49 years. They were inseparable and partners in everything they did.

Steve was preceded in death by his father Bob and his mother Peggy and his sister, Robin Walston. His wife, Karen, his brother, Alan Bischoff, his sister, Loren Mullane, and many nieces and nephews survive him.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 3:00 pm at McDonald and Son Funeral Home in Cumming, GA. Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm.
