Obituary

Shirley Gravitt Holtzclaw 84, of Cumming, Georgia passed away on Sunday, April 11th, 2021.

Shirley was born on September 30th, 1936 to Linton and Exie Barker Gravitt.

Shirley was a member of Coal Mountain Baptist Church where she was a founding member of the Coal Mountain Baptist WMU where she taught the Sunbeam Class. She also taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and the son-seekers class. She also directed the first Easter pageant, directed Christmas plays, and was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and served as assistant church clerk.

Shirley obtained a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree from North Georgia College. Shirley taught at Cumming Elementary School for 17 years and Coal Mountain Elementary School for 16 years, and was also awarded best Science Teacher in Forsyth County.

Shirley was also a founding member of The Coal Mountain Park Association where she served at the association secretary.

Ms. Holtzclaw is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years; Marcus J. Holtzclaw, and her son; Mike Holtzclaw, parents, siblings, nieces, nephews and father and mother-in-law; Henry and Ella Holtzclaw.

She is survived by her loving son; Tim Holtzclaw of Cumming, Georgia.

Sister; Louise Castleberry; sister-in-law; Charlotte Gravitt; brother-in-law; Maston Holtzclaw.

Grandchildren; Mark Holtzclaw and Drew (Abby); granddaughter, Mallory (Jesse) Grant; and her great-grandson, Tucker Grant, and great granddaughters; Emery Kate Grant, and Whitley Grant. 

Shirley is also survived by several nieces, nephews, friends, and very special friend; Debbie Smith.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 13th, 2021 from 10:00am until 9:00pm, and on Wednesday, April 14th, 2021 from 8:00am until 12:30pm.

Funeral services will be at 1:00pm at Coal Mountain Baptist Church on Wednesday, April 14th, with Rev. Danny Bennett, and Rev. Dexter Gravitt officiating.

Interment will follow at Sawnee View Gardens.
