Reed Schmeelk

Obituary

George Reed Schmeelk, age 71, of Dawsonville, Georgia passed away on June 16, 2022, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Ginn), and his sons Grant and Derek Schmeelk and their families.  He is also survived by his brother Steve Schmeelk and family.

Reed was preceded in death by his daughter, Brittany, and his parents, George and Evelyn Schmeelk.

Mr. Schmeelk was born in Decatur, Georgia where he lived with his parents, George and Evelyn Schmeelk, until he went to Georgia Southern University, where he attended for two years. He later graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia in 1972. He met his wife, Ginn, when they were seniors at Georgia. They were married for 46 years. He was always a staunch fan of his alma mater’s football team and attended many games over the years.

He was a true entrepreneur and had a stellar career in sales. Reed started with Burroughs Welcome Pharmaceutical Company in 1974 and later went into the family business, Bagwell & Spears, Inc. He then continued his sales career in various positions until he retired at age 62. One of Reed’s passions was real-estate and he owned, managed and sold a number of properties over the years. He would not pass a property for sale without jotting down the number to call later for information.

He had recently moved with his wife to Lake Lanier where they built a retirement home. One of his joys was watching his six grandchildren enjoy the lake.

Reed was loved by his family and friends and will be missed by many. Family will receive visitors at McDonald Funeral Home in Cumming, Georgia on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 from 10:00-12:00 PM and 1:00-4:00 PM with the funeral to follow at 4:00 PM.
