Joseph William Young, age 74, returned to the loving arms of our Lord on Thursday, August 24th, 2023, at his home in Cumming, GA.
Joseph was born on May 1st, 1949, at the US Naval Hospital in Chelsea, Massachusetts, to the late Joe Henry Young, Jr., and Lucy Kwiatkowski Young. He spent his childhood in Asheville, NC.
He graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill with a BS in Business Administration and then pursued a career in retail management, which led him to Danville, VA., where he met and married his sweetheart, Betty. They moved several times while raising their daughters before relocating to Cumming in 1982 for Joe to open the first Kmart. The couple would have celebrated their 50th anniversary on November 15th this year.
Joe, as his friends and family referred to him, was fond of music, movies, and Italian food. He was fiercely passionate about politics. A faithful servant of Christ, Joe volunteered in his congregation’s office once a week. He was thoughtful and thoroughly enjoyed attempting to stump his pastors with deep, theological questions. His hobbies also included collecting coins and comic books.
Family members left to cherish his memory include his selfless wife, Betty Young, and their children, Jennifer (Scott) Sewell, Kristin Young, and grand dogs, Sadie, and Charlie.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, September 10th, with a reception to follow at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1125 Bettis Tribble Gap Road, Cumming, GA., 30040.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to Family Promise of Forsyth and / or Georgia Mountain Food Bank in his honor.
