Gerri Hilliard passed away peacefully following a brief illness on June 7, 2022. Gerri was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Arva and Ida Mallory Floyd. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Lamar Hilliard. She was a graduate of Grady High School, class of 1956 and graduated from Georgia State University in 1975 earning a post graduate degree in secondary childhood education.
Gerri was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition to her family, she also devoted her special talents to her students at Stone Mountain, Riverwood and Chattahoochee High Schools as an English teacher of the gifted. Throughout her career she was steadfast in her commitment to the educational enrichment of her students. When told she could no longer take her students on field trips due to a bus driver shortage, she took it upon herself to learn and become licensed to drive a school bus giving her the ability to provide her students with field trips to the Atlanta Woodruff Arts Center.
In 2016, Gerri met her second love, John Goodson. They were soon married and became an inseparable couple until John’s passing in September of 2021. Gerri is survived by her sons Jim and Doc Hilliard, their wives Anne and Dale Hilliard, Stepson Mark Goodson and wife Kathi, grandchildren Reid (Jesi), Ross, Stephen, Allen, Jennifer (Joseph) Gayton as well as 6 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at McDonald and Son Funeral Home on Sunday, June 12th, 2022 from 1:00pm-3:00pm. A celebration of life service will be in the chapel of McDonald and Son Funeral Home at 3:00pm following the visitation.
