Elaine "Laney" Markham Sheffield, 73, of Ball Ground, Ga passed away on Sunday, June 4th, 2023, after a brief but valiant battle against ALS.
Laney was born in Boling Green, Kentucky on September 17, 1949 to her parents, Mary and Louis Markham. She graduated from Boling Green High School and moved to Atlanta in the early 1970s, going to work for BellSouth, although she always remained a proud Kentucky woman. She was a faithful member of Corinth Baptist Church while living in Stone Mountain, where she met and married Louis Sheffield, Jr.
Laney and Louis moved to Cherokee County in 2003 and started attending Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Laney loved to quilt & knit (as a member of the world-famous KnitWits), spend time with her family and cocker spaniels, and watch the Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs with Louis. Laney was known as a wonderful entertainer, loved to cook for guests, and was famous for her red velvet cupcakes. She devoted much of her later years in selflessly taking care of her husband and mom as their health declined.
Laney was proceeded in death by her parents, her brother, Lynn Markham, and her beloved husband, Louis. She is survived by her daughter, Angie (David) Harper of Belize, and her sons Edward (Benny) Sheffied of Pensecola, FL, and Richard (Dominique) Sheffield, and grandchildren Victoria, Graham, and Weston Sheffield of Cumming, GA.
A celebration of Laney's life will be held on Wednesday, June 7th, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 4096 East Cherokee Drive Canton, Georgia 30115. The family will receive visitors at the church beginning at 12:15. She will be laid to rest at the Mt. Zion cemetery, across from the church.
