Eladia Tapia, age 89, passed away on Friday, October 1, 2021, in Cumming, Georgia.
Eladia was born in Corozal, Puerto Rico on April 13, 1932. She moved to New York City as a young woman when she graduated from high school and worked for a costume jewelry manufacturer in Manhattan. It was there that she met her husband, Juan Tapia, when she was in her early twenties. She was married to Juan for 65 years until his passing in September 2020.
Eladia was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her greatest joy was to spend time with her grandchildren. She was happy to provide childcare for her grandchildren while their parents worked. Being with them during the day gave her the opportunity to lavish them with unconditional love. This along with the love and support she gave to her husband, son, daughter, and extended family members were among the most important things in her life.
Eladia was actively involved in her local church where she spent many years serving as its finance secretary and doing volunteer work for various committees and outreach activities. Her Christian faith sustained her through the darkest times of her life and guided her as she lived and served her God. Kind and generous with her time and resources, Eladia enjoyed cooking for friends and family who visited her home. Her family will always remember her baked salmon, stewed chicken and "arroz con gandules" (rice and pigeon peas.)
Eladia is survived by her son, John Albert Tapia, her daughter, Laura Tapia Hoffman, and five grandchildren (Joshua, Sofia, John Andrew, David, and Jonathan.) She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Katrina Tapia, and her son-in-law, Edward M. Hoffman. Eladia was preceded in death by her sister, Carmen Cordova Toro who lived in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. She was also half-sister to Aurea, Blanca, Isabel, Eddie, and Jose Antonio Cordova who reside in Puerto Rico and New York.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at 1:00 PM and a memorial service at 3:00 PM will follow in the chapel of McDonald and Son Funeral Home located at 150 Sawnee Drive in Cumming, Georgia. Interment will take place at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens in Cumming, Georgia, after the service.
