American Veteran 01

Daniel "Dan" Nugent

January 17, 2022

Daniel Andrews Nugent, 80, Suwanee, GA, passed away on January 17, 2022 after a brief illness.  He was proceeded in death by his parents, Daniel and Marion Nugent, and by his daughter, Suzanne Nugent Zimmer (Chris).

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carolyn Nugent, and brother, Richard Nugent, daughter, Laura Nugent Brown (Robert), and nieces Michelle Nugent (Matt Pihokker) and Donna Hopkins (Tim), nephew, Philip Mancini, and also by his pride and joy grandchildren: Natalie Zimmer, Amanda Zimmer, Kelly Brown and Kyle Brown.

Dan was born in Newton, Massachusetts and raised in Wellesley, Massachusetts.  He graduated from the University of Notre Dame where he was a member of the Naval ROTC program. Dan was an avid Notre Dame football fan, and for many years traveled to games, especially when Notre Dame played against Michigan State, so he could enjoy the rivalry with his life-long friend, Chuck Chenevert.

Dan led a very active and adventurous life. He served in the Navy in both active duty and reserves for 24 years and retired as a Captain in the Security division.  Dan and Carolyn traveled the world and stopped traveling a couple years ago when they decided they had seen all their places of interest.  Dan had numerous hobbies including skiing, motorcycling, Corvettes and flying glider planes (soaring).  He enjoyed these all to the fullest, especially after his retirement from the industrial instrument & valve industry. Dan loved to ski and he and Carolyn skied the US and Europe as members of the Atlanta Ski Club.  He was active in the Atlanta Corvette Club for over 45 years, and restored and treasured his Corvettes.  He was also an active member for many years of the Mid-Georgia Soaring Association and enjoyed the freedom that soaring provided. His favorite hobby and pastime was riding motorcycles with his long time ‘motorcycle gang’ and attending motorcycle races as well as many long cycle trips and adventures. He even spent a month on his motorcycle following the Lewis and Clark Trail and visiting National Parks with his friend, Chuck. He was affectionately known by his family as ‘Dangerous Dan.’

Dan was a great friend to many and always interested in others.  He was a devoted husband and father and also was very hands on in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. He was very involved in helping for many years with his daughter Suzanne’s care and life after her spinal cord injury at age 17 which resulted in quadriplegia.  He remained a big supporter of the Shepherd Center where she received her care.

Dan led an admirable and accomplished life and he will be missed by many.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of his favorite charitable organizations: The Place of Forsyth ( or Shepherd Center Foundation (
