Bernice May Smith

May 1, 1926 ~ November 21, 2021 (age 95)

Bernice (Bunny) Smith      May 1, 1926 – November 21, 2021

Bernice “Bunny” Smith (Hemke) peacefully passed in her assisted living apartment in Cumming, Georgia on November 21, 2021 at the age of 95.

She was born and raised on a dairy farm in Concord, Wisconsin –the third daughter in a family of 10 daughters and 1 son – and attended school in a one-room schoolhouse with many of her siblings.

She lived in Wisconsin until she met the love of her life, “Bill” and moved to Lynn, Massachusetts where they lived during their entire 53 year marriage.

She loved growing up in a big family and tried her best to attend the annual Hemke family reunion, held every summer in Wisconsin.  She cherished spending time with her siblings:  Beatrice (Beatty), Betty, Bonnie, Grace, June, Jean, Joan, Marilyn, Edward (Bud) and Nancy, and enjoyed the days of laughing together and recounting the many stories of “growing up Hemke”.

She was predeceased in 1999 by her husband James (Bill) Smith whom she met at a USO dance in Madison, Wisconsin, where he was stationed in the Army Air Corps.

She is also predeceased by two of her daughters – Linda Smith of Lynn, MA and Sharon Packard of Beverly, MA.

She is survived by her daughter Diane and husband Bob Morton of Cumming, GA and was forever the

loving Grandmother of her five grandchildren – Rachel Kelley, Suzanne Rocha, Lisa Henderson, David Packard and Stephanie Packard, and their spouses.

Bunny was also the proud and loving Great-Grandmother of Matthew & Michael Kelley, Vance Rocha, Blakely & Jackson Henderson, and Arianna and Hailey Packard.

A private burial will take place with just the immediate family.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to:
