Barbara Allen Jackson of Cumming, Georgia, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2021, one week after her 94th birthday.
Barbara was born in West Point, Mississippi to Walton J. Allen and Valeria Smith Allen on March 22, 1927. She was exceptional in the classroom, which allowed her to skip grades and graduate high school early at the age of 16. She studied geography at Mississippi State University where she met Marvin L. “Jack” Jackson, a basketball player. They married on December 20, 1947 and enjoyed over 70 years of marriage before Jack’s death in 2018.
Barbara’s devotion to her family was impossible to miss. Jack’s army career took the Jacksons all over the world, and Barbara served him well, embracing her role as a military spouse. Whether in Puerto Rico or Germany, she made their house a home and invested into their children. She raised them on her own during Jack’s year-long overseas deployments, though the couple exchanged letters daily.
Her love of family extended down to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved hosting them for sleepovers, cooking for them, and supporting their endeavors. She was a fixture on the sidelines of their sports games and in the Forsyth Central auditorium for her granddaughters’ choral concerts and theatrical productions. She and Jack were always waiting with flowers near the backstage doors after their girls performed.
Barbara was a true southern chef who took zero shortcuts in the kitchen and insisted on serving every meal on real dishes. Her homemade biscuits were rivaled by none. She was also an incredible seamstress. She made clothing for her children and later, costumes for her grandchildren – she even sewed outfits for their dolls.
Barbara genuinely loved helping others and meeting needs, volunteering her time, and cooking skills to church events and friends throughout her life. For years she shared her sewing abilities with efforts like the Christmas bazaar at Cumming First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Sorta-Fifties Sunday school class. She was a mom, Grandmommy, Rah-Rah and friend who will truly be missed on this side of heaven.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents, two sisters, and one brother. Survivors include daughter Patricia Terrell (Chuck) and Steve (Donna) of Cumming and son Mark (Barrett) of Florence, South Carolina; grandchildren Charles Terrell (Rosanne) of Collierville, Tennessee, Laura Ladd (Ben) of Newnan, Georgia, Amy Halley (John) of Ft. Myers, Florida, Leigh Harper (John) of Evans, Georgia, and Ridgeley and Snowden Jackson of Florence, South Carolina, along with eight great-grandchildren. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Eve Chakanyuka, Barbara’s devoted caregiver during her last days.
We will celebrate Barbara’s life on Monday, April 12th. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. followed by a service in the chapel of McDonald & Son Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Kathie Stasko officiating. Barbara will be laid to rest with her beloved Jack later that day at 1:30 p.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
